Outreach Programs

Let us bring our historical interpreters to your school, preschool or group with an Outreach Program. These programs are developed to provide hands-on, interactive experiences. Audience size is limited. Pre-paid reservations are required. Call 317.776.6000, ext. 281 for information and reservations.

Programs

A Traveler’s Tale (Grades 2–4)
View a 19th-century journey through the experiences of a seasoned traveler. How do traveling conditions compare to those of today? No traveler is complete without a bag and journal. Take a look inside each to know where this adventurer has been. Students will complete a craft activity that simulates the roads of 1836.

Length:   1 hour

Hand-Me-Down History (Grades 1-3)
Learning the stories and traditions passed from one generation to another helps young people see the links between the past and present. Students will learn about the roots of Indiana culture through toys, games, songs and stories.

Length:   1 hour

Movin’ West (Grades 4-6)
Explore what early settlers experienced when they moved west. Students role-play settlers who have sold their farms in Ohio and are moving west to Indiana.

Pioneer Sampler (Pre-K-Grade 1, ages 3-7)
This program exposes the young learner to concepts of early Indiana peoples. Students learn about pioneer and Native American living through a sampling of hands-on, seasonal activities such as butter churning and corn grinding.

Time-Traveling Teacher (Grades 1-4)
Education in the 1800s comes alive with a visit from the schoolmaster or schoolmistress. The teacher will bring slates and readers to practice reading, spelling and ciphering. The program includes games settlers played.
