Pennsylvania German Design

Create instant family heirlooms as artisans Ken Scott and Larry Gilliam explore the 18th-century folk art of Pennsylvania. Ken Scott will introduce traditional styles and design as students learn the art of calligraphy and drawing used in early fraktur, such as marriage and birth certificates. Day two will allow students the opportunity to broaden their design knowledge as they work with Larry Gilliam to learn about sgraffitto decoration of redware pottery.

Advanced Carving and Design

Refine your carving skills under the guidance of Jim Chambers. Special emphasis will be given to traditional 18th-century carving design and drawing. Using practice pieces, students will then learn to refine their skills in detail carving.

Silver Wire Inlay

Discover the process of creating decorative silver wire inlay with instructor John Schippers. Inlay can be applied to rifles, furniture and knife or tomahawk handles. Learn proper design, tool construction and execution of silver wire.

Basic Blacksmithing

Learn skills such as using a forge, drawing, punching, hardening and tempering steel and forge welding with Conner Prairie's Lead Blacksmith Nathan Allen. Projects such as s-hooks, fireplace pokers, chain links and forks will be made.

Introduction to Scratch Building

Discover what it takes to begin scratch-building your own flintlock rifle, fowler or pistol. John Weston will introduce the foundational elements of building a gun. Special focus will be on patterning and lay-out work to ensure a firearm that looks and feels correct. Elements of gunsmithing such as selecting the proper stock and hardware, inletting shaping and some finishing techniques will be covered.

Hearth Cooking

Conner Prairie hearth cooking experts will share their insights into traditional hearth cooking. Blending traditional and contemporary tastes, the class will explore 18th- and 19th-century style cooking.
