Session One

Mon. & Tues., October 11 & 12;
8 am–5 pm
Wed., October 13; 8 am–12 pm
Basic Horn Work (Session 1)

Art DeCamp introduces the art of working horn into functional items. Through the creation of a basic hand-made 18th-century horn, participants will learn history and architecture, horn selection, shaping, pressing and finishing. (tools required/$35 materials fee)

Bead Work

Under the guidance of Jan Farrar, you will learn the art of Native American bead work. Using traditional Western and Eastern Woodland designs, you will learn to properly warp the loom, set up patterns and weave the beads into an attractive bracelet or a patterned strap used to embellish hats, hunting pouches or knife sheaths. ($15 materials fee)

Building Set Triggers

Join gunsmith Ian Pratt to handcraft a set trigger. Using historic examples, Ian will lead you through the proper design and hand skills necessary in making a handmade set trigger. (tools required/$15 materials fee)

Forging Gun Mounts

Blacksmith Nathan Allen teaches you how to design and forge iron trigger guards and butt plates for a Southern Mountain rifle. ($15 materials fee)

Session Two

Wed., October 13; 1–5 pm
Thurs. & Fri., October 14 & 15; 8 am–5 pm
Advanced Horn Work (Session 2)

Further your horn working knowledge with instructor Art DeCamp. He'll lead you in making a traditional screw-tip style powder horn. Discussion of the history and styles of screw-tip horns, selecting the proper horn, lathe work and finishing techniques. (tools required/$50 materials fee)

Folding Knife

Build an 18th-century style folding knife with instructor Nathan Allen. Traditional filing, bench work and heat treating skills will be used to construct an attractive steel and brass folding knife. (tools required/$25 materials fee)

Leather Work

Join Ken Scott as he teaches his unique style of making hunting bags and pouches. Pattern development and basic leatherworking techniques will be covered as well as Ken’s unique antiquing methods. (tools required/$35 materials fee)

Knifesmithing

Under the tutelage of Melvin Lytton, you will learn about the history and manufacture of a traditional hand-forged knife. Instruction includes materials selection, forging and finishing a functional knife. (tools required/$15 materials fee)

Decorative Technique for Redware Pottery

Learn how to lay a design, glaze and carve on Pennsylvania German and Early New England redware. Take home an heirloom piece of pottery to cherish for a lifetime.
