What does authenticity mean?

In this time of financial stringency we hear that people are returning to basics and core values. They eat at home; they eschew luxury goods. It’s also said that people are increasingly seeking what is real and authentic.

Because of the renewed interest in authenticity, Conner Prairie recently worked with PGAV Destination Planners, the St. Louis consulting firm that helped develop our master plan, to commission a research study to determine its impact upon the sites and attractions industry in the United States.

The soon-to-be released results are fascinating. Indeed, authenticity is a genuine trend these days – at least people are giving it more lip service. 80% of attraction visitors say they prefer “real experiences” over “fantasy/entertainment.”

The study also notes two significant caveats – gaps closer in size to the Grand Canyon than to potholes. First, only time will tell whether action will follow words. Will Mom and Dad really choose a trip to Colonial Williamsburg when the kids are clamoring for Universal Studios? Second, people’s interpretation of authenticity varies enormously. People applied the word to historic sites and parks, but even casino and theme park patrons called for greater authenticity in these venues. To many, the word authenticity simply means the opposite of commercialism.

As an attraction considered very authentic, we’re pondering what this new interest in back to basic values might mean for Conner Prairie.

What does authenticity mean to you and how important is it when you think about ways to spend your leisure time?

Authenticity to me simply means being "real" and embracing reality. It's a daily struggle for many of us to live in reality when there is the temptation to get sucked into false worlds such as TV shows, video games, even facebook. Facing and embracing life head-on - and teaching children to do the same. We need to move our children away from alternate realities and give them the opportunity to explore the real world. Introduce them to their ancestors and teach how they lived by visiting places like Conner Prairie and Colonial Williamsburg. When they have a sense about what kind of stock they are made of, and what they are capable of, I believe it will motivate them to make the most of their lives and be a powerful force for the betterment of their world.

Authentic means that something is being done in a way close to the original. "Genuine" is a good synonym. Both apply intuitively to the work at Conner Prairie, which seeks to do things in a way that accurately represent the original.

The same can be said for Universal Studios, however the factors of enrichment and larger meaning are missing from that kind of entertainment. Even though it can be a new idea or an authentic experience, it does not expand our understanding.

The phrase "To many times" above uses the wrong spelling of "to" for the way it is being used in the sentence.

I have no idea how this will translate in the attractions industry, but I do agree that this a growing trend. For a business, I think people now equate authenticity with transparency. Transparency is the new buzz word even at the White House. Nowadays, people crave this authenticity or "transparency".

BTW...you should make the text box bigger for the comments. It is a little hard to write in the comments section.

Very interesting topic. I look forward to the release of the report.

Personally, I like technology. I love my Iphone, for example. But, when I think authentic, I think of sunsets, fall leaves, the brillance of the first snow, the feel of a horse, etc. I fear many in the younger generation cannot sit and watch a sunset or appreciate the beauty of a full moon. I hope we are opening that opportunity to many through our work. From a business stand point, I think authentic equates to honesty and integrity. It's also about customer service and keeping the client informed. It's about backing your product up.
